Pecha Kucha Dublin: Autumn Edition

24.09.15

Irish Architecture Foundation and Totally Dublin magazine present this year's third edition of Pecha Kucha.

Since its first edition in 2003, Pecha Kucha nights have invited thousands of people involved in design, art and architecture to share their ideas and lend some inspiration to 700 cities across the globe.

In our previous editions we’ve had short talks on everything from the sex life of plants to the occult secrets of country gates. Expect more oratory excellence this time around as we welcome another dream team of top speakers to the Sugar Club stage. We’ve got:

Dr Lisa Godson (NCAD)

Dr Lisa Godson promises to enthral with her talk on instruments used in obstetrics and gynaecology. Lisa researches, writes about and lectures on design and material culture. Her current publishing projects include the books Making 1916: material and visual culture of the Easter Rising (Liverpool University Press) and Secret Lives of Objects: stories of design from modern Dublin. She is research collaborator with artists Jesse Jones and Sarah Browne on the major Artangel/Create/Arts Council of Ireland 2016 project In the Shadow of the State exploring statehood from the perspective of the female body.

Shane Waring (DCC Beta)

Shane Waring has worked as architect for private ecological architecture practice Solearth, co-founded Ireland’s first and only carsharing service GoCar, and also formed part of Designing Dublin a transdisciplinary team which used various design processes including design-thinking to explore vitality in Dublin City. He currently works as an architect in Dublin City Council and recently established Dublin City Council beta – a Dublin City Council live mechanism for trialling, assessing & implementing ways to improve the experience of life in the city. DCCbeta.ie

Sven Anderson (Continuous Drift)

Sven Anderson is an artist working between Ireland and the US since 2001. Anderson’s work explores the act of listening within diverse architectural, physical, social, and emotional contexts. His practice is a discursive platform that operates through artistic intervention, academic publication, participatory processes, and interactive design.  He is currently involved in a public art commission for Dublin City Council, titled MAP (Manual for Acoustic Planning and Urban Sound Design), which was awarded the 2014 European Soundscape Award from the European Environmental Agency.  In 2015, Anderson curated the work of 21 artists within Continuous Drift, an artwork site in Meeting House Square that provides an interface for the public to control the sound environment. svenanderson.net

Fuchsia MacAree

Fuchsia MacAree is a freelance illustrator. She studied Visual Communication in NCAD, did an MA in Illustration in the University of the Arts London and now works in Dublin. She’s a fan of bold graphics, wordplay, sneaking jokes into commissions and never doing anything totally seriously. macaree.ie

Niall O’Brien  (The Growdome Project)

Niall O’Brien of the Growdome Project explains what exactly the Growdome is: “The Grow Dome Project aims to empower communities sustainably and socially. Dublin’s first geodesic grow dome in the heart of Dublin 8 is an intensive all-year-round sustainable food production tool, an arts and music exhibition space, a community meeting and education area, and an iconic artwork in its own right – all at the same time. Our prototype is nearing completion and the plan is to build 40 domes in the next 5 years.” So something like Bio-Dome then?!

Cúán Greene and Harry Colley (Dublin Pop-Up)

Formed in 2014 by Cúán Greene and Harry Colley, Dublin Pop Up is an innovative and exciting fine dining events company which has shaken up the Dublin dining scene. Their food, which is hosted in a number of unconventional spaces such as galleries, defunct delis and donated spaces around Ireland’s capital city, has garnered the attention of food writers, brands and fans alike. The two cooks have put their own spin on contemporary Irish cuisine, incorporating influences from indigenous ingredients and European design. dublinpopup.com
