New Now Next is about disseminating NEW Ideas, regarding contemporary issues relevant NOW that can impact on the NEXT generation, curated by the Irish Architecture Foundation and sponsored by ARUP.

We’re delighted to be joined by Peter Bishop on May 11who over the past 25 years has been a planning director in four different Central London Boroughs and has worked on major projects including Canary Wharf, the development of the BBC’s campus at White City and the Kings Cross developments, one of the largest and most complex sites in London. He was appointed as the first Director of Design for London, the Mayor’s architecture and design studio, in 2006, the Deputy Chief Executive at the London Development Agency in 2008 and in 2011 he carried out a review of national architecture and design policy on behalf of the Government and the Design Council.

Peters talk titled ‘Dark Matter: Planning, Politics and the Shaping of Cities’ will explore how physicists have identified dark matter and dark energy as comprising over 95% of the known universe. You can’t see it or measure it, but without it the universe doesn’t make sense. Politics is the dark matter of our cities. We can plan and design cities but unless we understand the processes that shape them we will have little impact. In this talk Peter Bishop will use case studies of his work to illustrate the ideas of tactical, incremental and temporary urbanism in a fluid and ever changing world.
