The Art Tunnel in Smithfield is hosting its official opening party on Tuesday 24th July in the Chambers Building at the lower western end of Smithfield Market. The Art Tunnel is a landscape architecture project that has transformed a strip of wasteland along the Luas corridor in Smithfield (60 metres long, 4-8 metres wide) into the first outdoor art gallery for Dublin and a landmark and community garden for the Smithfield area.
The art tunnel exhibits site specific installations by emerging artists and provides a platform to show art by community groups. The site is also planted with native plants to provide an undisturbed habitat for a biodiverse wildlife. It is a pilot scheme for regenerating wasteland in the City Centre through private funding from local businesses, private stakeholders and commercial sponsors and has been built mostly by volunteers with the support of Dublin City Council.
The first art installation is now on display as is the first community group show. There will be free wine and beer, delicious nibbles, live music, a post card show of further art installations and an auction of wonderful things. The opening will be followed by an after party at the Dice bar on Queen Street.
