Design Week 2011

Design Week 2011 in association with Crown Paints kicks off today all over the island of Ireland with events running until 6 November. Design Week is an umbrella brand and works in partnership with a wide network of Irish design organisations and representative bodies. These range from professional design bodies, creative enterprises, design companies and studios, 3rd level design colleges and paper and print suppliers.

The basic idea for Design Week 2011 in association with Crown Paints is quite simple; a range of partnership organisations agree to stage an event or series of events around the time of Design Week providing an exciting snapshot of a very eclectic Irish design scene. Building on the work begun by PIVOT Dublin, Design Week is a celebration of Ireland’s creative sector.

Just some of the highlights in this year’s programme include a talk by leading Irish fashion designer Una Burke (7pm Wed 2 Nov, Wood Quay Venue; RSVP to admin@designweek.ie), a talk by architect Tom de Paor entitled “The Alibi of Truth” (6pm Wed 2 Nov, School of Architecture, University of Limerick), an exhibition called “An A – Z of Unusual Words” by graphic designers The Project Twins (opens 6pm Thurs 3 Nov, runs daily until 10 Nov, Mad Art Gallery, Dublin) and a discussion on Guerilla Urbanism led by Ard Architects (12noon Fri 4 Nov, Colaiste Feirste, Belfast).
